Who Are Korke y Judith?
Korke Escalona and Judith Cordero are the founders of bachata sensual, the modern dance style that transformed bachata from a traditional Dominican social dance into a global phenomenon of body expression and connection.
Based in Cádiz, Spain, Korke developed the foundations of bachata sensual around 2004, taking basic bachata steps and reimagining them with deeper body movements, smoother transitions, and elements from other dance forms. Judith, with her background in ballet and rhythmic gymnastics, brought technical precision and elegance that helped transform Korke's vision into a clear, teachable methodology.
👑 The Maestro de Maestros
Korke is known as the "Maestro de Maestros" (Teacher of Teachers) in Spain, because many of today's most famous bachata sensual dancers, including Daniel y Desiree and Luis y Andrea, were directly influenced by his style and teaching.
The Invention of Bachata Sensual
In the early 2000s, bachata dance was primarily the traditional Dominican style, fast footwork, simple turns, and close partner hold. Korke saw something else in the music. He heard the emotional waves in the melodies and wanted the dance to express them.
Working with only basic bachata steps and music, he began experimenting: body waves, isolations, hip figures, head movements. He prioritized corporal expression, using the body to interpret the music, over traditional turns and footwork patterns.
The result was a style that felt completely new: intimate, expressive, and deeply connected to the music. He called it bachata sensual.
When Judith joined him, her ballet and gymnastics background added a layer of technical clarity and grace that made the style not just beautiful but teachable. Together, they refined the methodology and began spreading it through workshops and festivals.
What Makes Bachata Sensual Different
- Body waves, flowing movements through the torso
- Isolations, independent movement of chest, hips, head
- Hip figures, circular and figure-8 hip movements
- Partner connection, emphasis on lead-follow through body contact
- Musical interpretation, dancing the melody, not just the rhythm
- Minimal footwork, the body does the talking, not the feet
Their Legacy
From that small studio in Cádiz, bachata sensual has spread to every continent. Today it's the dominant style at bachata festivals worldwide. Korke y Judith continue to lead the movement, teaching regular classes, offering online lessons, and performing at international congresses.
Their influence is measured not just in their own performances, but in the entire generation of dancers they inspired: Daniel y Desiree, Luis y Andrea, Marco y Sara, and countless others who built on the foundation Korke and Judith created.
